How do I buy a work of art?

Buying a work of art, whether it be a contemporary artist, an old master sketch by a famous artist, or even furniture follows various criteria. Spelling them out is easy, but judgement, experience and knowledge of the art market are all necessary. However here are some areas that you should be looking at. Is the attribution to an artist backed up by the expertise of a specialist in the field? Is the art work signed? What is the provenance or history of the fine drawing?

Do I buy from a dealer?

Private collectors go to a dealer for their experience, expertise and knowledge. You may also be able to negotiate on a price [not always], payment terms, get free advice and information on framing, mounting and conservation. These areas, which are normally not possible at auction, where the terms are very different and worth examining carefully. Dealers buy from dealers, as well as institutions and private collectors.

Do I buy at auction?

Buying at auction is exciting and fun and is a growing market made easier through the internet. But unless you know what you are doing or have no practical experience or do not have the time to view hundreds of auctions a year then you may want to consult a dealer to do the leg work for you. Charges vary on relationships and prices, but this is an area I have helped private clients over the years as a dealer.
