Bacler dAlbe began his career as a draughtsman, and lived in Italy for seven years. He later entered the army and was noticed by Bonaparte, who used Baclers talents to draw topographical views and armoury. He also worked as a lithographer, and was part of Bonapartes staff, in charge of the topographical office and followed him in all of his campaigns. Bacler became a general in 1813 and during the Restauration lived in Svres where he resumed his career as an artist.

Our gouache is a characteristic work by the artist and can be compared to a number that have been on the market1. There are also a number of works by Bacler dAlbe in French public collections2.
