He was a pupil of Leendert Overbeek (1752-Haarlem 1815), in Rome. He was a member of the Society of Saint Luke. He worked in Vienna and Munich.
Pforr, Overbeek, Hottinger and other artists shared a dislike for the academy in Vienna, and from 1806 met regularly to discuss reform.
