Freund was a gynecologist who worked in Berlin from 1901. Vilette lived amongst important collectors. His wife was one of the two daughters of the famous antiquarian Spitzer.
The artist of the present drawing was possibly working in Haarlem, due to the characteristic use of the red chalk. The present drawing was probably executed from life and shows a maid making a basket.
