Remigio is best known for his etchings of landscapes and religious subjects influenced by Paul Brill and he was likely a pupil of fellow Florentine Giulio Parigi and Jacopo Ligozzi. In 1612-13 he travelled through the Netherlands, Belgium and France which he documented in detailed drawings of building, houses and cityscapes. Jacques Callot was reputed to be a pupil of Cantagallina before the former moved to Rome to work with Antonio Tempesta. It is also likely he tutored Stefano della Bella. He painted a 'Last Supper', 1604, for the church of San Bartolomeo, now in Museo Civico of Sansepolcro, aiding him in this painting was a relative, Antonio Cantagallina (born 1616).
Our drawing is comparable to a number of drawings by the artist, including the following drawing of a 'View of a Bridge, Watermill beyond, Riders and a Dog in the foreground', drawn in pen and brown ink, and wash over black chalk, measuring 255 x 390 mm, sold Sotheby's, London, 2 July 1984, lot 69. This drawing is comparable in subject matter and size and handling. It is interesting to note that the latter drawing probably came from an album which was inscribed 'Vedute di Toscana d 'Jacopo Ligozzi' which contained 105 drawings, mostly by Cantagallina, which was sold in London at Hodgson's Rooms, 26 November, lot 596. This could provide a provenance for the present drawing. Other comparable drawings include one of 'Hill Top Town in Tuscany' with Colnaghi in 1957 (photo Witt Library).
