Jan Verheyen specialized in townscape scenes, but he did also paint landscapes and portraits. He was a student of the carriage and ornamental painter N. Osti of Utrecht. Verheyen was deeply influenced by the subjects and styles of the 17th century masters Jan van der Heyden and the Berkheyde brothers. His paintings are in the following public collections in the Rijksarchief and the Gemeentearchief en Centraal Museum, Utrecht, the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, amongst others.

Our drawing is either a recordo or a preparatory study for a painting of the same subject and view, which was on the market in 1980.1 [See Figure 1]. Our drawing is a characteristic watercolour by the artist and can be compared to others that have been on the mark including Imaginary view in a Dutch Town and A View in Utrecht, and others. 2
