Kerkhoff mainly drew watercolours and drawings, but he also worked as a designer in a wall paper factory of Pieter Barbiers, where he worked till 1796. He also worked for engravers and etchers. He did not work for eight years, but then he started working again in the early 1800s and his best period is regarded as 1808-1814. He worked in towns such as Amsterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht, Arnhem and Nijmegen. In 1814 he was made a member of Felix Meritis.

There are other landscape drawings by Kerkhoff in Bowdoin College and in the Rijksprentenkabinett, and indeed a watercolour of a Town view also executed in 1814 in Utrecht1.

It is fascinating to note that a few years ago I sold a drawing by the same artist and of a very similar location, perhaps a few meters apart, of A Wooded Landscape with a Stream and a Cottage, with Hunter and his Dog crossing a Bridge, and a Child walking along the River Bank, which was signed and inscribed with the location on the verso Op de Selon te Zien op Beekhuizen/ in Gelderland/ D Kerkhoff. 1814, which is now in a public collection in The Netherlands.
