By Dupin Le Jeune (b.1743), Galerie des Modes et Costumes Franais, Cahier des Costumes Francais, suite d'Habillemens de Femmes a la Mode, 1778-87, vol.I, plate 30, (titled Habit de Bal, Le Corsage et Le Juppon retrousss avec des Glands).
Jacques-Sébastien was a pupil of his father Sebastian Leclerc Le Jeune (1676-1763). The former was made Professor of Perspective of LAcademie Royale de Peinture in 1778. He worked as a painter of mythological scenes, genre scenes and as a draughtsman. The present drawing was engraved by Dupin [see Figure 1] for the 5 volume publication Galerie des Modes et Costumes Franais, to which numerous artists contributed including Claude-Louis Desrais, Franois Louis Joseph Watteau, Charles Germain de Saint Aubin and J.B. Martin.
The text accompanying the print of our drawing goes into great detail how the costume looks, and there are a number of other comparable costumes from this volume, including Femme en Robe a la Polonaise, Femme de Qualit en Dshabill and Marchande de Modes. The majority of the drawings in these volumes are by Jacques-Sébastien Leclerc. The present work is in a very good condition and a typical example by the artist for this publication.
