Jules Adler, born on 8 July 1865 in and died 11 June 1952 in, is a painter academic French , nicknamed le peintre des humbles by Louis Vauxcelles. He endowed his characters and landscapes with and a deep inner life. His parents, modest textile traders, decided to move to Paris having noticed his talent and early artistic ability. He was admitted to the School of Decorative Arts in 1884 and then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He also took courses at the Acadmie Julian under the direction of William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. In 1892, he exhibited with success. In 1895, he received a grant from the state and continued to exhibit successfully naturalistic representations of the working world.
taples or taples-sur-Mer is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in Northern France. It is a fishing village and port on the Canache river.
Our drawing is a typical and characteristic work by this artist, who drew and painted figures and children beside the coast or ports, other examples include a painting of Boulogne, France which depicts two boys looking out towards boats, in the Colchester and Ipswich Museum (R.1948-124.x) and lgante a charcoal drawing sold at Europ Auction Paris, 3 October 2012, lot 15.
