This dramatic and striking drawing is preparatory for the painting of the same title in the Muse du Louvre, in the cupola above the Escalier Mollien.

Mller was a student of Baron Gros and Lon Cogniet. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and was bestowed with numerous honours. He worked on four important paintings for the ceilings in the Muse du Louvre, representing the periods of art in France under Saint Louis, Francois Premier, Louis XIV and under Napoleon 1. Mller also painted eight allegories in the same scheme, and finally La Gloire Distribuant ses Palmes et ses Couronnes.
