Grey wash and brush on hand made laid paper, with watermark of an Italian paper (anchor), traces of framing lines

The paper is glued on the corners to another matt, which is an 18th century laid paper, numbered 88 on the verso of the matt. The condition of the paper is very good, there is a crease in the centre and very light foxing and a vertical crease in the paper, the latter crease was formed during manufacture of the paper, known as a drying line.

SOLD TO A PRIVATE COLLECTOR

Jean-Baptiste Lallemand was a French artist born in Dijon. He was mainly a painter and draftsman of landscapes and genre works. After a stay in Italy, he went to Paris and became a member of the Acadmie de Saint-Luc. He died in Paris.

The Muse des Beaux-Arts de Dijon owns many of his works, including a drawing and a painting showing the Chteau de Montmusard. His works also feature in the collections of the Muse Carnavalet and the Cabinet des estampes of the Bibliothque nationale, both in Paris.

Our drawing is stylistically comparable to a number of brush drawings by the artist including one in the Louvre of L'arc de Constantin et le Colise, Rome, RF 41289, and another The technique and colour of the brush work are comparable to a drawing of A View of Rome from the Palatine Hill, sold at Christie's, London, July 16, 2010, lot 32.
