156 x 107 mm. (6 1/8 x 4 1/4 in.)
This is a presumed portrait of Albrecht von Waldenstein (1583-1634) or Walenstein, he was a Bohemian soldier who offered his services, during various wars, to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II.
Carl or Karl Joseph Geiger was a very well-known Austrian painter and illustrator of the 19th century. He was born in Vienna in 1822. Already at the age of 13 he studied at the Vienna Academy under Josef von Fuehrich and was strongly influenced by his Professor. Having started as book illustrator, the artist later became popular as an outstanding historical painter. In 1853-1865 he was Professor of the Vienna Academy. His works can be seen in Austrian museums and in various public buildings, e.g. foyer of the Opera House in Vienna.
The attribution is based on other drawings by the same hand with a historical attribution to the artist.
