Carbonnier is listed as a pupil of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). He clearly excelled as a draughtsman of portraits since a number of his works are known through copies of his work in public collections. At the British Museum there is a portrait of Admiral Sir James Saumarez, Bt, dated 1823. The print is made by and published by Charles Turner. There is another portrait of The Earl of St. Vincent, again made by and published by Charles Turner, 1822 after Carbonnier. In the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, there are two portrait engravings, again after work by Carbonnier. These are titled Frederike Caroline Sophia Alexandria, Duchess of Cumberland and another of Richard Raikes. At auction a black and red chalk drawing appeared in 2009, Head of a Woman in profile, dated 18291. There is a portrait miniature by Carbonnier of The Duchess of Cumberland currently on the market in Austria. He is also known to have executed Trompe lOeil of Unrequited Love which also sold at auction2. Carbonnier clearly worked in England and more research may reveal the identity of the current sitter.
