Signed Pinelli fec and dated Roma 1807 and inscribed with the title, pencil and watercolour within an inscribed border
205 x 166 mm. (8 x 6 1/2 in.)
Pinelli worked as a printmaker, painter, sculptor and draughtsman. He studied under his father who was a sculptor. Bartolommeo also studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna and the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, though he pursued a more commercial life by selling his paintings and drawings to a foreign market. Pinelli associated himself with other artists who were working in this manner, such as Franz Kaiserman. Indeed Pinelli often painted the staffage in Kaisermanns pictures, see a recent article on the collaboration of the pair1. Pinelli worked with Felice Gianni, whom he assisted on the frescoes for the Palazzo di Spagna in Rome from 1806-07. Pinelli contributed to a number of editions of engravings, which reproduced local costumes and customs, titled Costumi Romanae, this was first published in 1809. Our two drawings are part of this tradition. Pinelli also contributed illustrations to a number of literary classics.
